Rust Gachhi Tussar With Hand Painted Kalamkari

Long before it was a saree border, the Tree of Life was a trade good. Masulipatnam's Kalamkari workshops painted it onto cotton for centuries, and the motif travelled with the cloth, eventually reaching Persian, European, and Islamic markets that all read it the same way: a tree with roots in the earth and branches in the sky, standing for the link between the two.

This border keeps that structure intact. Against a forest-green ground, a single vine climbs and branches, its blue stem forking off into flowers rendered in ochre, magenta, and rust. Owls perch in its branches at intervals, watching rather than flying, grounding the panel the way a tree grounds a landscape.

The body is where the saree earns its name: pure Tussar silk in a warm, undyed-looking rust, textured rather than glossy, the kind of silk that holds its own shape in the pleats. The green Kalamkari border runs the length of the drape and gathers into a wide pallu panel where the full tree unfolds.

Wear it where you want the eye to travel slowly, from the plain silk field to the density of the border, the way the motif itself was always meant to be read: roots first, then branches.
