Blue Dhonekhali Block Print & Embroidery With Mirror

Dhonekhali cotton takes its name from Dhaniakhali, a weaving village in Hooghly, West Bengal, where fine cotton weaving has been the region's trade since the late 19th century. Traditionally kept plain, an off-white or grey ground with a narrow border, the saree has since opened up to bolder patterning while keeping the fine, light handloom weave that made it a Bengal staple in the first place.

This piece pushes furthest into that bolder register. The mint-blue body carries scattered mirror-work embroidery in small clusters, catching light in flashes against the quiet ground. The border does the heavy lifting: a dense, all-over geometric block print in navy and charcoal, diamonds and lattice work framing a run of large kairi, the paisley motif with roots in Persian boteh design that made its way into Bengal's own textile vocabulary generations ago, anchoring the border top to bottom.

The result is Dhonekhali's light, breathable cotton carrying a far more graphic, statement-making pattern than the saree's traditionally understated roots, finished in soft ivory tassels at the pallu's edge.
