In West Bengal, the patuas were never just painters. In villages like Naya, they were painter, lyricist, and performer at once, unrolling a hand-painted cloth scroll frame by frame and singing pater gaan, songs of their own composition, to carry the story to whoever gathered to watch. It's one of the few art forms where the picture was always meant to be heard as much as seen.

This pallu carries that lineage in its bones: a densely painted panel in deep green, built from tight geometric borders, temple-spire shapes, and a stylized central figure, all rendered in the bold-outlined, flat-color style that lets a patua's scroll read clearly even from a distance, the way it needed to when it was performance, not just object.

The body stays deliberately quiet against it: mustard pure silk with a fine hand-painted speckle and small scattered medallions, giving the pallu room to hold the story. The blouse continues the same palette and border language, so the whole drape reads as one composition rather than two.
