Batik earned its name from the Javanese ambatik, to write with wax, and its most refined form took shape in the royal courts of Java between the 13th and 14th centuries, where artisans used a copper pen called a canting to draw wax directly onto cloth, resisting dye and leaving pattern behind. Certain motifs were once reserved for royalty alone. As Java sat along major trade routes for centuries, batik's visual vocabulary absorbed outside influence, floral forms carried in through European trade among them, layering onto the technique's own deep well of local symbolism.

This saree carries that floral register. Deep aubergine dominates the field, giving way to rust at the body, both covered in a dense, hand-drawn floral and fern print, the layered, slightly uneven line quality that only comes from wax-resist work rather than a repeat block. The pallu and border deepen into aubergine again, framed by a fine striped edge.

The body is Gachhi Tussar silk, spun from the shorter, textured threads left after finer Tussar yarn is reeled away, giving the surface a warm, slubby depth that holds the batik's dye unevenly in exactly the way the technique is meant to.

A saree carrying a UNESCO-recognised craft from Java, worked onto a silk with its own textured, handmade history.
