Slate Grey Printed Katha Semi Linen

Kantha began as necessity, not decoration. Rural Bengali women took saris and dhotis too worn to wear and stitched them into something new, layer over layer, bound together with a dense running stitch. What started as reuse became one of Bengal's most recognisable embroidery languages, carried forward for centuries almost entirely through women's hands.

This saree translates that visual language into print. The body is slate grey, patterned with small mandala-like medallions and a dense scatter of white dots and paisleys, echoing the dense fill-stitch texture Kantha work is known for. The pallu shifts into pale grey and opens up entirely: peacocks in blue and violet perched among red and orange florals, rendered in the bright, slightly folk palette that's carried Kantha's bird-and-flower motifs through generations, peacocks especially, which recur constantly across the tradition as a marker of grace and beauty.

The fabric itself, semi linen, keeps the drape light and slightly textured, closing out in matching grey tassels along the pallu's edge.

It's a saree that borrows Kantha's visual world rather than its needle, but keeps the motifs, and the meaning behind them, intact.
