Kerala Cotton Cream White Handpainted Tulip

The kasavu saree carries a history longer than most surviving textile traditions. It descends from the mundum neriyathum, worn in Kerala as far back as the third century BC, a plain off-white cotton drape that stayed close to unchanged for centuries. What made it distinct was gold: the Malabar coast's spice trade brought the metal in, and Kerala's weavers began working it into fine thread along the border, a detail that's remained the fabric's signature ever since, still central to Onam dressing and still tied to weaving towns like Balaramapuram and Chendamangalam.

This piece keeps that base intact: an unbleached, off-white cotton body, finished in the traditional wide gold border along the edge and running the length of the pallu. Painted over it, loosely scattered rather than repeated in a fixed pattern, are clusters of tulips in coral, burgundy, and gold, each cluster paired with soft olive leaves, placed with enough space between them that the plain cotton stays visible and the gold border stays the frame, not competition.

The result sits exactly where it should: rooted in one of the oldest weaving traditions in South India, worn a little differently every time depending on where the pleats fall and which blooms end up on show.
